Spain MBA Work Rules in 2026: Working During Study and After Graduation

For an international MBA student in Spain, “Can I work?” can refer to several different legal situations. They should not be collapsed into one answer.

This summary uses Spanish government guidance available in August 2026. Immigration rules can change, and individual circumstances matter. Use it to understand the framework, then verify the current rule for your own case before acting.

Working while you hold a higher-education study authorization

Spain’s Ministry of Inclusion, Social Security and Migration publishes specific guidance on access to employment for holders of long-term study authorizations.

For higher-education students, the current guidance says employment or self-employment must be compatible with the studies and generally may not exceed 30 hours per week.

That is a legal ceiling in the guidance, not a workload recommendation for a full-time MBA. The student’s authorization, academic schedule, employer and type of work still matter.

Staying after graduation to search for work is a separate status

Spain also provides a residence route for qualifying graduates who want time to seek suitable employment or develop a business project.

The current Ministry information sheet describes this as a 24-month, non-extendable authorization for eligible graduates of qualifying higher education in Spain.

A critical limitation is that this job-search/business-project residence authorization does not itself authorize employment. It lets an eligible graduate remain in Spain for the search or business-project period. When the person obtains qualifying employment or is ready to begin the business activity, the appropriate work/residence route must still be put in place.

Moving from study status into a work route

The Ministry maintains separate guidance on modifications from higher-education study authorization into employee work, self-employment and other residence routes. The correct path depends on the person’s circumstances.

This is why two classmates can have different immigration processes even if they graduate from the same MBA at the same time.

A practical planning sequence

During the MBA, verify whether the work you are considering is compatible with your study authorization. Near graduation, determine whether you are moving directly into an eligible work route or using the job-search/business-project residence authorization. If you use the job-search route, keep “permission to stay” and “permission to start work” separate in your planning.

If you’ve recently been through one of these processes after an MBA in Spain, reply below with the practical side: which documents you needed, how you got appointments, how long processing took and how you coordinated with your employer. Please say when you went through it, since procedures change, and keep in mind that one person’s experience is not a substitute for the current government rule.
